 Shakuhachi

Hi , my name is Mike from Adelaide SA . Three weeks ago I purchased .a Windelf beginners Shakuhachi locally from Harrison music . I am 69 and have for years thought about learning to play . I have no musical experience at all . For the first few days all I produced were a few squeeks and little else .Then somehow one day a beautiful note sprang from it! I reasoned that if one note hid within there must be others. So I kept blowing and searching and sure enough in that simple piece of bamboo there hides an astonishing array of notes , tones ,textures and emotions . It talks to me of many deep things and has already brought a tear to my eye .This relationship will grow for many years to come ,the instrument has already become my friend and confidante . I felt that as you are the maker of this remarkable flute I should let you know how important your work is .I shall be eternally grateful for your fine gift ; as I am sure are many of your customers . This world is a little better place that you have given of your knowing and your heart ..

Hello Mr.Dowling
M name is Hudson Portner,i recently purchased a shakuhachi in D from you,and am excited to tell you of the progress i am making in trying to learn to play an instrument once again.    I have tried and failed numerous times to learn to play many instruments, including but not limited to,the guitar and drums, and i have always feared critisism if i dared mention my love of the flute, but i have found no negative reaction when i say shakuhachi, and people love the music,i love the ease of play and the haunting and ominous sound.    I  have only been playing for 2 weeks and already i feel that i am going to have a long life of enjoyment with this flute, and i recomend to anyone wanting to learn to buy one of your flutes,as i will do in the futureThank you for a great piece of work,it is one of few things i hold dear in this life,i will protect it well.         Good luck and God bless you Mr.Dowling.                                   Greatfully yours                                                        Hudson m .portner

 Hi Noel,
Thanks for sending the flute. I think that it is fine for beginners and would be happy to put your link on the ASS website. Would you mind if I keep the flute as a sample to show people?

Hello Noel
Yes thanks the flute is great! I couldn't make a sound on the first day, but didnt want to put it down. now whenever i pick it up and play i feel really relaxed, and i think it will help me give up smoking ciggarettes!  No, it sounds beautiful and feels lovely to play, i like the soft vibrations under your fingers and my housemates find it soothing.
Thank you for making it, i think i will be playing for a long time and maybe one day might need some in different keys!

Hi Noel
The flute arrived very promptly and I have been busy practicing.  I can now play a reasonable scale although it takes me a while to get my embouchure right each time a pick up the shakuhachi again.  I gather this is to be expected.  I was thrilled to be able to get any sound out of it the first time. God bless U tube and David Zasloff!  He is playing a D tuned instrument but the technique is the same.
I find I have to use my index and little finger as the holes are that distance apart  but that is quite comfortable.
My husband quite likes the sound so I have had no complaints about my practicing.  I will keep at the scales until I can get a consistent sound and than look for some simple music to play.
Many thanks,
Elizabeth

 Hi Noel,
I have received my Shakuhachi flute and I am pleasantly surprised.  It is exactly what I was looking for.  A simple bamboo flute that I can take with me anywhere and play when I like.  I even managed to play some notes on it on the first day and it sounds great.
I'm now looking forward to many hours of practice.  May I thank you for making these kind of instruments available.  Keep up the good work~

              (  Referring to Shakuhachi in A  )

    Hello,
I   have just got the shakuhachi, did a quick test run with it, for what it cost, its not bad at all.
I've tried flutes that's practically unplayable sold for way more expensive than what you're charging. The sound is not bad for a non lacquered bore. The actual appearance is also nice (smells good too!). Makes a good starting flute.

Hi there Noel,
I recently purchased one of you shakuhachi flutes in 'D'.
I would like to let you know how impressed I am with the quality, craftsmanship and most importantly the sound! I have never played a flute before, let alone a shakuhachi, and after some practice I have been able to make the most sublime sounds.
I am now well and truly compelled to continue to learn, and I am glad that I have such an excellently crafted flute to learn with. As I improve I shall certainly be acquiring some more of these in other keys.
I look forward to contacting you again. In the mean time I will be on a rock in the garden relaxing with my Windelf flute!
Cheers!    Dave

    Hi  Noel,
, Thanks you for making such a wonderful instrument. My Shakuhachi flute you crafted for me is very well made, has a wonderful sound and feel. I am most impressed by your craftsmanship and think it is of a very high standard and as good as any overseas instrument. I look forward to seeing your other products! I would be very happy to endorse your products and pass your name to anyone looking for bamboo flute!   How about a bamboo didgeridoo?
Keep up the good work - the Shakuhachi is challenging but fantastic! Cheers, Harry

 Hi Noel,
Thanks for the flute. It is a lovely instrument, took a little while to find the right way to play but with a bit of efffort it sounds great. Fingering chart is also a big help.

'Having bought both a Shakuhachi in D and a Native American Indian flute in A off you, I can honestly say that you are a man with tremendous craftsmanship. Each flute you create is truely a work of art. I'm sure the music that each of your flutes make, will be something that will bring smiles to many faces for many years to come.
The soft tones of both flutes have an amazing ability to transport you to another place.  Thanks once again for the flutes, and I hope to buy more flutes from you in the future.

Mr Dowling,
We received the shakuhachi today (friday the 20th of jan 2012) so I picked it up from our post office straight away, my lil girl had 4 hours a practice, she said is impressed with the sound and craftsmanship of the shakuhachi for its price, and is very happy with the flute, the play went well. She found the 'Sweet Spot' as she calls it,straight away, so thank you very much for your all the time and work you put into your flutes and the effort you put into sending us the flute on urgent request.

Hi Noel,
Received my shakuhachi in the mail yesterday, thank you! It's a beautiful flute and the markings on the front look a little like the sun's rays :-)
It has a very different feel to the D shakuhachi, it took me a fair few attempts to make a sound! It seems to require a lot more of my focus on breath control and posture, which is a good thing.
I can now play the full lower octave most times & am finding it much easier to reach the second octave in a controlled manner than on my first flute! It has much softer, smoother and more controlled sound to it.
Thank you very much, I love it!
Regards,Hayley

Hi Noel
Just received the Shakuhachi this morning before going to work. I opened the package and was pleasantly surprised with the make and looks. I have been playing/learning the Anasazi flute the last 3 weeks and can tell you that I straight off got a beautiful sound out of the shakuhachi. It is so easy to play compared to the Anasazi.
Thank you
I look forward to many hours of playing.
Kind Regards Antony P.

Hi Noel (Windelf).
I just recieved my shakuhachi today. It came well packaged and in excellent condition.
I immediately tried it out and I am very pleased by the rich, fluid tones it makes.
I must admit I was a bit worried about buying a shakuhachi from you at first, because of the much cheaper price than most other sellers, but my fears have been put to shame as the quality far exceeds the price.
Thanks for a wonderful instrument, I have wanted one for a very long time.
 Best Regards.

 Hi Noel
The flutes arrived in perfect condition today
The bamboo finish looks nicer than I expected
Flute bags are great and glad I ordered them
I have no flute or musical experience and the Native American flute played beautiful straight away with minimal effort and is for me the easiest flute to play

With The shakuhachi flute I could get a sound out of it fairly quickly and I was glad I had previously watched your video on how to play , I could not always reproduce sound but this is what I really love about it as it will take a little practice to develop the technique , the sound came when I relaxed a little , it will certainly improve my lung capacity
Thanks again for 2 great nice looking hand crafted flutes

Hi Noel,
So happy to say that my new Shakuhachi arrived today. It's great! Thanks
I've already tried it out for an hour or two. Very different, amazing how much difference there is between the two instruments due to their size. Much easier to get kan on the larger flute and harder to blow the lower notes louder. It's going to be fun to get to know this new instrument.
By the way, I've had two queries about where to get Shakuhachi - one from within my orchestra and one from a dojo. I've mentioned you to both of the people and will email them shortly to give them your email address and web site. It's nice to be able to pass these people on to you :)
By the way, I also like the bag you sent - it's great that the two bags match!
Kind regards, Trev

it looks beautiful too!

Hi Noel,
Started my 1st shakuhachi lesson last week. My teacher said that the shakuhachi I purchased from u is very good 4 the price that I paid. It's nice when a gamble pays off. I am working on making consistent tones, I have more confidence that I will improve because I have a quality instrument. Thanks.

I have been in love with the sound of the Shakuhachi flute for years and to have one of my own is such a gift! It is beautifully crafted and the quality of sound is just as I expected. It does take time and frequent practice to form a clear note but I am improving every time I pick up the flute, and I am looking forward to making beautiful music with this instrument, and sharing in the magic of the Shakuhachi with friends and family. Thank you Windelf. Bright blessings.

G’day/ Ni Hao, Ni Hao .... Greetings from Scotty, an Australian in China...
After many raspberries, head spins, dizziness and a lot of frustration, my first real tone finally
came out. It was as if the whole shakuhachi had come alive in my hands. Wow! It was
vibrating, buzzing and breathing along with me ... I’ve never experienced this before in my
35+ years of playing guitar or bass. What an amazing feeling!
Although it was an on-going struggle to make the sound again, I slowly learned to relax and
keep returning to the one breath. Returning to this one moment.... Just like a meditation. One
breath. One breath. This moment. One breath. .... Already this low A 2.4 Shakuhachi is
helping me to float to other places.
Noel was very patient with my emails and with answering my questions. He created
something which looks and sounds great. The deep low tone is what I described to Noel in
the first place – he has really delivered. He has also inspired me to start making my own
shakuhachi flutes – that’s another story for another time.

Hi
I love the sound from my N/A flute – it’s so fun to play – have even ordered some CD’s  to listen to masters.
I am struggling with the Shakuhachi – will need to find  a teacher in Melbourne.  The holes are a bit better on this one D one than the C one.
Thx,  am happy with both.

Noel (Windelf), I can't thank you enough.
I first came across the Native American flute at the markets and instantly fell in love with the beautiful sound and the simplistic nature in which it is played. But they were so expensive, so I searched online and found that they all range from $100 to even $400. Over the next few months I could not stop thinking about it, I wanted one so bad. I kept thinking about King David as a sheperd boy out in the grandure of nature and playing his instrument to the creator. So I said to God, "if you can find me one that I can afford I will dedicate every sound it makes to you." Next thing I know I stumble across your site and found that your flutes are by far the cheapest. It took a couple of hours to get used to as I am not musically tallented at all but now I am playing the most beatiful tunes after only one day. I have decorated it with thin leather straps and beads and am going to put some feathers on it too, it looks awsome. I love it and I am going to take it everywhere with me. Thanks again.

HI Noel,
Thank you so much for being so prompt in sending the flute to me. It was a joy to get home after a particularyl hideous day at work and see the postie had popped the parcel behind my flyscreen door!   I opened it and couldnt get the paper off quickly enough,! The flute is beautiful, the sounds just as I imagined, so now to keep playing and improve. I have purchased it for meditative purposes, and also to improve my lung capacity, but it also had quite a soothing effect on my dogs, at first my great dane was cocking his head to the side looking really confused at the sound, but after coming so close that he could smell the oil you had used to season the bamboo, he now just sits calmly at my feet. A Pied Piper effect! :). I live opposite the ocean, so am really looking forward to sitting in the rock pools in the coming months and playing to the sea. Again, thanks so much. Do you mind if I put a link to your site on my website..I am in the process of adding site address that I enjoy.
Thanks Noel, and have a great day. Jo

Hi Noel
Many thanks for the new Flute.  I must admit it is taking me longer to get used to the feel of this flute than the 5 hole flute.  I keep going back to this flute because it has such a comfortable feel about it, no doubt the new flute will feel the same after a while.  Anyway if you want something to put on your site you can quote me when I say that since receiving my first flute it has opened a whole new interest  for me as I find out more and more about Native American Flutes, so much information is available on line.  The flute you sent me has a great feel to it and a wonderful tone.

Hi Noel,
Got the flute on Friday...much earlier than I was expecting it. I have to tell you, it far exceeds my expectations in terms of quality and appearance...and it sounds amazing! I'm a guitar player and had never picked up a flute before, but I'm really starting to get the hang of it and enjoying it tremendously. As a matter of fact, I have a guitar gig planned for tomorrow night for a small community garden that my sister operates, and I'm planning on playing the flute, accompanied by my sons on bongos and shaker.
Thanks again, and take care.   Tony

Hi Noel,
In the whirlwind of travel i had not made time to write you about the flutes. I got them the day before we left, I believe. It was great timing!  I first found the packaging to be protecting the flutes very well, and they arrived with great timing. When i opened them i immediately could feel the high level of quality and craftsmanship. I first played the native american style flute, and i actually began to cry from its amazing tones. I have played native american style flutes before, and none have satisfied me like this one does. I especially enjoy the way the mouthpiece is designed, as with other flutes of that style, with a small mouthpiece, i find myself suffocating with air. But with this design, how large the opening is, i can play it very comfortably. And the shakuhachi flute is equally amazing in how it was crafted and sounds. Like the native american flute it seems to have a tung oil (is that what oil you use?) which feels very quality and durable. The tuning of the flute is right on, and the utugachi (mouth piece) is very well shaped and makes for a really great blowing edge sound. Overall i am highly satisfied with the flutes and consider it a great deal. Thank you, Windelf!

Hi Noel (Windelf).
The flutes arrived yesterday. Thank you very much.
Well what can I say?  I can't believe how good they are.  Craftsmanship and quality have gone into these. It's amazing that a piece of bamboo can be made into such a nice instrument.  The sound of them is really nice.
Last night I just started to play each one getting used the breath control as well as controlling each note.  Tonight I just compared each key and each note and pitch against my Roland Piano/Keyboard and can't believe how accurate they are.
I'm so glad that I ordered more than one as each key has its own feel.
Some how I don't think this will be the last order from me.

                Walking Stick Flute

       Hi Noel,
Ordered a walking stick shakuhachi flute from Windelf for two reasons. One, I got this bung knee, hip and shoulder issue, that is pretty painful and slowing me down. As a music lover, native flute player, and in middle age, a wandering bard dreamer who loves nature and walking and life, why not convert my stick into a flute?! Well, that's the plan anyhow, to keep moving.... The bamboo is solid and strong, and the walking stick is firm and very helpful, and feels great to walk with (and the odd looks and smiles is character building).
Now, the second reason, about the choice of shakuhachi: Not easy to play first off, so that why I chose it, but once the beginning of that note comes, wow, keep trying. A meditation flute is a shakuhachi, day by day tool (as per Noel's advice). And the first day, the sound did come...and as a musician and breathworker...it is obvious these simple flutes have no limit, to find that sweet spot within, and a depth for healing with no bounds. A real peace flute... Thank you Windelf!

I've just got my walking stick flute.
There is no doubt in my mind, you are a master flute maker.
I've been playing different kinds of flutes for years and have quite a few. I've also been studying meditation for over 30 years. I was hooked on my new flute straight away. I'm very happy with it.
I will be in contact to buy a few more when I've got some more money.
        Kind regards, Anzac

Hi, Noel.

The walking stick flute arrived today, and I am already utterly in love with it. I admit that even though I am at work, I couldn't wait to unpack it and try it out. Fortunately, I already have a little experience with shakuhachi-style instruments, so I was able to get a reasonable sound out of it before too long.
This really is an amazing instrument. I've a growing collection of working instruments - from flutes to ocarinas, etc, and this newest flute will truly be the pride of my collection. I love the sound it makes, even though I'm in the early stages of learning to play it (says I, after having received it less than an hour ago!).
I know that once I re-develop my breath control, I'm going to get hours of joy out of my walking stick flute. Thank you so much for sending it out so promptly. I am one very happy girl right now!
Cheers,  Naomi

Noel,
The flute arrived on Wednesday.......and......I feel soooo blessed!!!!!!! You have a gift and talent, and the world is better with your flutes in it. My hyper overactive dog lays down with her ear on the end of the flute, and lays there until my wrists are too sore to play on!!!!! It is beautiful. And magic. I can't wait to master it!!!! Thank you so very much!!!!!!!

Hi Noel/Windelf, The walking stick flute arrived safely and soundly on the other side of the globe, quite some time ago. Thank you, I love it. I just tested it on my chromatic tuner, and the low note is a perfect G. The flute is very responsive. Getting the “half-notes” (hole half-covered) is easy, which is how I distinguish a good flute from a mediocre flute. Playing in “transverse” position was new to me, but I like it. I have nerve issues in my right wrist, and I find that having my arm closer to my body is more comfortable than having it extended, especially since I can let the flute droop down to the right and relax my wrist even more.
I live near a canal, so I have been taking walks, finding a comfortable rock, and playing for the entertainment of the geese who are out showing off their new babies this time of year. As a walking stick, it feels solid,  like it will last for many years
Take care, and thanks again, yours,
Mary Dean

                       Bamboo Sax

Hi Noel,
My package has arrived with no damage. And the saxophones sound awesome. Exactly what I wanted. I still need to practice the shakuhachi a bit longer, I haven't managed to produce the proper sound yet. Only had it 5 mins though. Practice makes perfect.
I love the look and smell of them. So organic and natural. They're beautiful. I will treasure them.
I will give some decent feedback when I become more competent. Thank you so much.
Peace and blessings... Leon.                                                        Australia 29/5/2017
